Med Lab Scientists stage protest at the University College Hospital,Ibadan

 Laboratory services at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, were grounded on Thursday as members of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists staged a protest to register their grievances against the hospital’s management.                                                                            

The aggrieved workers said the management did not respect court rulings which granted them autonomy, adding that the state of their laboratories was dangerous to their health. 
                              

The Chairman of the association, Oladoyin Oladayo, who led the protest, said the body was unhappy with the non-implementation of the members’ scheme of service by the hospital, relegation of the status of the director of the department and poor working condition.                   

According to him, the poor working condition is injurious to members working in the various laboratories.                                                                                                                             
 Oladayo said the association was fighting against manipulation by a group of people in the hospital, who were bent on undermining laboratory professionals.                                       

He said, “The scheme of service for our members is a directive from the Federal Government but the hospital has brushed it aside, thereby putting our lives at risk and relegating the relevance of our profession even though we are strong federating unit of medical services.                         

“The Director of Medical Laboratory Services has no autonomy as prescribed and the status of the office is the opposite of what the government provision says.                                                   

“In fact today, UCH now refers to the occupier of that office as a Director of Medical Laboratory Scientists in the past two years. It means the director is toothless and not in control of the laboratory department. It diminishes the authority of the director.                              

“Moreover, our autonomy, as spelt out by three court rulings has been tampered with by UCH management. We are independent professionals but this is not respected. The last judgment was given three weeks ago.”                                                                            As at the time of report,the Public Relations Officer, UCH, Adedeji Bobade, said efforts were being made to resolve the crisis.That ,the management of the hospital and executive of the body were in a meeting to resolve the issue and hopefully pronouncement will be issued by Friday.                                                                                        He further added that,the protesting workers were not on strike that work was still going on at the laboratories.
