Stage 4 cancer patient, Destini Schafer and her then fiance ,Brandon Thomas got married on May 6th at a courtyard in a Memorial Medical Centre in Springfield ,Illinois where Schafer has been receiving treatment.Although they had anticipated to have their wedding in Jamaica not until Schafer complained of stomach pains that was subsequently diagnosed as cancer.
They got married before their friends and family, including their 8-month-old son Noah and their three children from previous relationships, Thomas said.
The wedding was planned and fulfilled in five days courtesy of registered nurse Shipley-Lovekamp and support of other nurses.
Thomas who described Shipley to ABC News said
"She's an amazing person, like a guardian angel," Thomas told ABC News of Shipley-Lovekamp. "She got tuxes donated for me and my dad, and a maid of honor dress. And wedding rings."
According to Shipley-Lovekamp she said:
“I wanted Destini to be able to have a wedding because we didn’t know how much longer she was going to have. I wanted her to be able to be happy and focus on something other than her diagnosis."
"Everything came together really well. There were so many people who were willing to donate and help bring everything together. We all just chipped in. Watching the ceremony, it was very heartwarming and humbling to know that we were able to do this for her.”
Thomas who is uncertain of the future of Schaper has set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for medical treatment. "We're just praying for the best," he said.
