Billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is renowned for the fateful cross-country drive he took from New York to Seattle, in which he formulated the concept behind what would become his ultra-successful online retail marketplace. Using his knowledge of technology and his understanding of business strategy and consumer tendencies, the New York-based investment banker launched what would become Amazon.com from his garage.
The payoff for his change of tack has been profound: recently Forbes estimated Bezos’ net worth at $48.9 , making him the fifth richest man on earth.
Martha Stewart too changed direction a couple of times before becoming the homemaking icon we all know today. While attending college, she earned extra money as a model, working for industry giant Chanel. After that Stewart went on to a job on Wall Street selling securities at brokerage firm Monness, Horstman, Williams and Sidel. Renovating her family’s Connecticut home got her into the catering and entertaining business and the ambitious and smart mogul-in-the-making took the opportunities presented to her and ran with them.
Bill Gates didn’t need to form the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in order to use his money for the greater good. The world’s richest man stepped away from Microsoft – the tech company he cofounded and helped build to world prominence – with enough capital to perennially throw off a fortune to be spent on whatever charities and causes struck his fancy. But Gates instead established a philanthropic organization that today dwarfs all others of its kind. In doing so, he’s created for himself another full-time career and mission.
